Beaver Country Day School

Beaver Country Day School (BCDS) in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts is an independent, co-educational middle and high school educating children ranging in age from 10 to 18. Founded in 1920, this small school has a proud history of leadership in progressive education.

Libretto and design partner kor group were contracted in 2007 to create a new BCDS viewbook and separate search pieces for its middle and upper schools. One of the project’s main goals was to educate parents and prospective students about what progressive education actually is: a commitment to implementing teaching methods, both traditional and progressive, that authentically engage and inspire students with all kinds of learning styles.

The viewbook theme proposed by Libretto and kor group, Beaver Country Day School Works, is a playful vehicle that enables BCDS to concretely demonstrate the success of its pedagogical approach. Developed in close collaboration with Beaver’s director of communications, the viewbook showcases several examples of actual student work, including mathematical equations worked out by students and excerpts taken from research reports and essays. It also highlights six of Beaver’s young, dynamic professors, focusing on the various ways they challenge, engage, and support their students in and out of the classroom. The viewbook is a visually attractive and intimate portrait of a unique educational institution.
