On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics partnered with Libretto to create an impact report to honor its legacy and articulate a clear vision for the future.

The report serves as a tribute to the vibrant academic and professional community the Center has cultivated, and is intended to deepen understanding of the Center’s mission and demonstrate its role as a global leader in an increasingly complex ethical landscape.

To learn about the Center, Libretto conducted in-depth interviews with the leadership team, faculty, and stakeholders. The finished report outlines the Center’s history, programs, and reach, and is structured around three core areas: Embracing Complexity, Driving Change, and Shaping the Field. Through this approach, we highlighted the dominant themes that emerged through our discovery conversations, such as the Center’s commitment to asking—and answering—some of society’s most complex questions, its dedication to going beyond theory to create tangible outcomes, and the important role it plays as a hub for professionals across the field.

During our discovery, we were struck by the extraordinary individuals who have been instrumental in defining the Center’s trajectory. Profiles of scholars, educators, and practitioners shed light on their passion and dedication, and showcased their contributions both to the Center’s academic foundation and the field of medical ethics more broadly. The report articulates how, under Dr. Rebecca Brendel’s leadership, the Center is uniquely positioned to address today’s evolving ethical questions and vital global health challenges. And it explores the Center’s role as a convener, bringing together diverse voices from around the world to tackle the most urgent bioethical issues of our time.

The report was first distributed to participants at the Center’s 10th anniversary celebration, and subsequently used during Dr. Brendel’s summer 2025 trip to Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Indonesia, where she shared the Center’s story with a broader international audience. Response to the report has been overwhelmingly positive. The Dean of Harvard Medical School, George Daley, noted how it “encapsulates and advances Dr. Brendel’s vision.”
